本書は、2017年11月から2018年1月までミラノの美術館「ピレリ・ハンガービコッカ（Pirelli HangarBicocca）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。単なる視覚的、記録的アーカイブにとどまらず、芸術の受け取りや寄付にまつわる、そして大衆を展示の形の中心点とするアイデアの発展を証明する一冊となっている。美術評論家でありキュレーターのレア・ヴェールジネ（Lea Vergine）、詩人、エッセイスト、翻訳家、文化評論家のルイス・ハイド（Lewis Hyde）、社会学者、研究者であるアルノー・エスクエール（Arnaud Esquerre）、哲学者のパトリス・マニグリア（Patrice Maniglier）、執筆家、文芸評論家、脚本家のアラン・パウルス（Alan Pauls）、キュレーターのハンス・ウルリッヒ・オブリスト、アーティストのクリスチャン・ボルタンスキー、そしてキュレーターであり美術史家のキアラ・パリージ（Chiara Parisi）とキュレーターのロベルタ・テンコーニ（Roberta Tenconi）がそれぞれの多種多様な視点を通し本テーマに光を当てている。ミラノでの展覧会を彩った作品を記録した膨大な図版とあわせて、1995年に「サーペンタイン・ギャラリー」で、アーミン・リンケ（Armin Linke）が撮影した未公開の歴史的な記録写真も収められている。
