本書に収録されているイメージは、スティーブンの他の作品集の印刷中に偶然生まれたものである。オフセット印刷では、インク調整を目で確認するために、版の交換時やマシンを温める際に、印刷機に紙を通す。この紙は節約のために同じものが使われることが多く、シートの上にさまざまなイメージが重なって生まれた「Magnificent Failure」が誕生した。画像がオーバーラッピングすることで予定されていないイメージが生まれ、これを目にしたスティーブンは印刷所のゴミ箱からこのシートを救い出したのである。
