一対の向かい合う蝶をあらわした文様を対い蝶と呼びますが、四方に蝶を配置することで全体が七宝文様のように見える構図になっています。

そのため亀甲文様は神聖な文様とされ、庶民は見ることも許されなかった文様でした。
