Niagara Falls in the Snow, seen from Goat Island by Frederic Edwin Church, 1856 Size:12x18in (30x45cm) and the University of MarylandNiagara Falls in the Snow, seen from Goat Island (1856) by Frederic Edwin Church captures North Americas most storied cataract at the height of winter drama. A leading light of the Hudson River School, Church was celebrated for panoramic vistas that fused scientific observation with awe inspiring spectacle. Here, frozen spray clings to dark rock, swirling snow softens the horizon, and the muffled thunder of the falls seems to rise from the canvas.
